After several years as a recruiter, Tim Schumm, the founder and president of Lucas James Talent Partners, created a new model of recruiting, one in which they serve as an alternative solution to the conventional contingent recruiting model. He quickly scaled up Lucas James in just 20 months - but then COVID hit. Tim was forced to pivot and develop a new playbook for his organization in order to succeed in this new environment. Tim talks about being transparent with his team as a leader, the steps he took to lead his team through the crisis, and how he cultivates a feedback loop with his team.
Here are my four big takeaways from the conversation:
- As the boss, you have “psychological size” relative to an employee.
- When you get feedback from a team member, especially if it’s their first time giving it to you, just listen to what they say and don’t jump all over their feedback; otherwise you may discourage them from further feedback.
- It’s important to have a lot of touch points with your team during a crisis.
- Make sure to get feedback from people you can trust to give it to you straight, as we all have blindspots.
