Tom De Weerdt, EVP and CFO of Mauser Packaging Solutions, blends a bit of right and left brain into his leadership style. Using a philosophical and growth mindset along with plenty of spreadsheets, Tom has led several global teams at a variety of large corporations. It’s integral for leaders to keep an open mind for as long as they can, says Tom, and seek out a variety of trusted perspectives from a diversity of people before making key decisions; otherwise you just end up confirming your own hypotheses and biases.
Here are my three big takeaways from the conversation:
- Being open, curious, and logical helped Tom take on role after role, even roles where he didn’t feel qualified.
- It’s important to ask for feedback and to truly be open to hearing it - even feedback you may not like. It’s better to know and learn from it than to not know at all.
- Tom has a mechanism that he has used successfully to prepare for each of his roles, building a framework that gave him the confidence to approach new roles and hit the ground running.
It was a fascinating and informative conversation learning about his leadership journey! What was your biggest takeaway from this episode?
