Every year, our team at Raise The Bar steps away from the day-to-day and comes together for a retreat.

For us, leadership isn’t just a role—it’s a practice. And sometimes, the best way to grow as leaders is to step back, reflect, and reconnect before being able to level up their skills and grow.

This year’s retreat gave us space to sharpen our skills, challenge our assumptions, and explore new ways to support leaders and teams. Here’s a look inside.

Stand Out Discussions

At Our Raise The Bar Retreat

  1. Understanding Our “Color Energies”

We explored Insights Discovery with RTB Leadership Coach Kimberly Flood, uncovering how our different “color energies” shape the way we think, plan, and communicate.

Takeaway: To successfully communicate, you first have to understand how others think and what matters to them. Plus, it gave us a playful way to better understand each other and how to collaborate more effectively.

  1. Enrolling vs. Selling

Head of Community & Growth Yvonne Zeman led a powerful session on the difference between enrolling people in a vision vs. selling an idea.

Takeaway: Co-creating a vision and getting true buy-in is far more effective than pushing ideas through traditional selling tactics.

  1. Trust & Confidence in the Body

RTB Leadership Coach Genna Clark guided us through a somatic activity on trust and confidence, connecting leadership back to the wisdom of the body.

Takeaway: Confidence (or lack of it) shows up in our nonverbal communication more than we realize. Being aware of it and knowing how to prepare, can completely change how we show up in a meeting.

Books That Spark

Great Leadership Conversations

Books often spark some of our best retreat conversations. While we didn’t discuss topics from each of these titles this year, they’re part of our broader leadership journey and we recommend them to anyone looking to level up their leadership.

Raise The Bar Favorites: Reading Recs for Leaders

We don’t just stop learning at the retreat. Here are three books that have shaped our conversations and continue to shape our leadership:

10x is Easier than 2x by Dan Sullivan

Why settle for 2x  when you could grow 10x? This book challenges leaders to think bigger and focus only on the activities that generate exponential growth.

Surrounded by Idiots by Thomas Erikson

A practical guide to understanding four key behavior types (red, yellow, green, blue) and how they shape communication. Once you understand the colors, you’ll start to see why some conversations flow—and others clash.

The Culture Map by Erin Meyer

Essential for global leaders, this book helps you navigate the cultural differences that can shape communication and collaboration. It’s a powerful framework for building trust across borders.

Our retreats leave us feeling connected, inspired, motivated and reminds us of something simple but profound - leadership is a journey, not a destination. Whether it’s through retreats, coaching, or a really great book, the best leaders are always learning and always practicing.
