3 Leadership Habits That Still Matter In 2026

As we head into 2026, leaders everywhere are asking the same question: “What skills will matter most as AI and technology continue to accelerate?”

The answer may surprise you.

According to Deloitte’s 2025 Gen Z & Millennial Study, the #1 development priority for younger workers isn’t technical expertise - it’s soft skills (what we call power skills). Developing empathy, communication, leadership skills are now more important than ever.

Three skills every leader should strengthen in 2026:

1. Empathy

AI can automate tasks - but it can’t motivate people. Leaders who listen deeply, respond with curiosity, and make their teams feel seen will retain top talent and build genuine trust.

  • Try this: In your next 1:1, ask this one question - “What’s something I can do that would make your work feel easier or more energizing?”

2. Communication

Deloitte’s research shows that Gen Z and Millennials want clarity, transparency, and context - not corporate jargon. Clear communication and context reduces confusion, accelerates decision-making, and creates psychological safety.

  • Try this: Before sending a message, ask -“Is this clear enough for someone to act on today without any questions?”
  • Insider Tip: When delegating or assigning projects, we love asking - “Do you have everything you need to complete this project?”

3. Leadership

Your team doesn’t need a boss. They need a leader who can align people, set realistic expectations, and inspire momentum - even in the face of uncertainty.

  • Try this: In meetings, shift from giving answers to asking questions that spark ownership. Ask - “What path forward do you think makes the most sense?”
  • Learn more: In our latest podcast episode, we check in with Simon Curran of Rokt, who shares some of his insight about how great leadership starts with Connection, Clarity, and inspires teams to have the Courage to act (in this order). Listen to it here - you won’t regret it.

As you plan your goals for 2026, remember: People skills still matter. Now, more than ever.

There’s no doubt the world of work is evolving quickly, especially with the rapid development of AI. But one thing remains true: as long as people are doing the work, people skills will always matter. Empathy, clear communication, and strong leadership aren’t skills that are just “nice-to-have.” They’re essential to building trust, navigating uncertainty, and helping teams do their best work.
